9th gen F-150 4x4 with a short box and regular cab, a V8, auto trans, and auto hubs.
I love these trucks. Dad had that ‘95, which was the first car I ever drove in an empty parking lot when I was 9, and they’re just so good looking. I want the auto stuff for convenience, as it’d be a daily driver while I tear into the Dakota. Yes, I know the auto hubs are infamous for failing, but I don’t want to get out of the truck to engage manual hubs when it’s -15 degrees outside. V8 because rumbly noises. Automatic because daily, and not sporty.

I just wish they didn’t rust out so easily. Here in Michigan, they’re either missing half of the body from rot, or priced at something like $7500, which, as a broke 19 year old, I can’t even come close to affording.

Solid things, especially the I6. The V8s are generally reliable too and they’re supposedly easy trucks to work on. They do tend to have issues with the dual gas tanks and it’s common for only one to work.

I’ve heard so much about the 300. They’re damn near unkillable. I just want the V8 because of the sound. Dad’s had the 5.0, and my grandfather’s Foxbody does too obviously, so I’m also somewhat familiar with them. Neither causes (or caused in the F-150's case) much trouble. I think even both gas tanks worked on that thing. It was rust free when he bought it, I think it came from down south. One winter changed that quickly.

I’ve been looking at them too, I really want the straight six though, I’ve never owned one and I’ve heard it’s a great motor. I’ve also been trying to find econolines with it too but they seem rare.

There’s an abundance of the sixes here in Michigan. Every short box I find seems to have one. They’re sturdy as all hell, I just want a V8 because I love them so much.

T hey made a bunch of “value oriented” king cab 4x2s with that 4.9 in line six the last year or two of that gen - still see them every once in a while, especially in that bronze color.

I had a ‘94 2WD in college. Blue/blue/blue, 302, extended cab, regular bed. Too big for my taste but it was a good truck. It’s still around; my uncle has owned it since 2011 or so.

My gas tanks both worked, but the needle on one of them died.

Would remind me of Dad’s ‘84 too much. I’m still a little sad about the way that turned out. Besides, I want a pickup.

Solid trucks, these. Had mine for going on 4 years now. Very easy to work on.

Did the needle go to “F” or “E”? F=an open circuit (usually a bad sending unit or bad connection at the sending unit), E=a sunken float. The float on the sending unit is brass and they develop pin holes, fill with gas, and sink to the bottom of the tank. Both are usually easy fixes.

I’ve owned a couple of them. They’re durable , but no more durable than a Windsor. The only benefit they offer is 4-cylinder power (130hp!) with big block V8 fuel economy (best mine ever did was 11 mpg). Get the V8, ignore the 300 I6 fanbois.

I’ve had a couple. a ‘92 4x4 long bed E4OD/5.0, a ‘93 SVT Lightning, an ‘87 F-150 300I6/4-speed, a ‘91 F-150 4x4 long bed 5.0/M5OD, an ‘89 F-250 4x4 7.3/ZF, and an ‘89 F-150 4x4 300/M5OD. I miss the Lightning and the ‘91 5-speed most. The Lightning was my favorite vehicle ever and the only one I ever totaled , and the ‘91 was just a nice truck and the one I learned manual in. I love love love LOVE these trucks. They’re the last trucks Ford ever made, IMO... ‘97+ can die in a fire.

I don’t believe they made the 300ci I-6 with 4wd, otherwise I’d suggest it instead of the V8. My understanding is the 6 lasts longer and does pretty well at everything else even with fewer cylinders.

When I was looking for trucks , I looked real hard for a regular cab longed I6, manual, 4x4. Very tough combo, found ONE and it was gone in a hour or so.

Owned an 84 F150 with the 300 I6.
You sir are wrong. They have big block torque, with 4 cylinder fuel economy.
240ft-lbs of torque just off idle was enough to tear your house off the foundation, meanwhile ours had no issue averaging 18 mpg in daily use.

They were okay for their time. I had a 91 F-150, extended cab/short bed/2wd/5.o auto, and a 92 F-350, crew cab/long bed/4x4/7.3 non-turbo. The 7.3 IDI was deathly slow. The 91 F-150 was a bit under powered for what I towed with it, but it was a good first truck overall.

* Pops hood of his ‘90*
*Sees insanely slow 300*
*Looks underneath truck*
*Sees pumpkin on the TTB*
I think it was an option...

90s truck prices have been on the rise like crazy lately.
In reality, it’s in great shape for one of these around here and it has under 150k. I wouldn’t pay it, but I would bet it doesn’t last long.

This is something I regularly hear. I think the carbureted ones were better. Mileage went to shit with EFI?

The ‘04-’08 are good trucks and very capable. My issue is with the spark plugs that weld themselves into the head and the grenading cam phasers. Modular engines suck. They’re needlessly complicated for no reason. They don’t get better mileage or make more power than a simpler pushrod engine.

I’ve heard. We had an ‘04 FX4 crew cab. Leased it right off the showroom floor. Was a good truck for the time we had it, but that was over ten years ago. A good friend of mine just bought an ‘08 FX4 extended cab. I still like them, but I wouldn’t own one purely for how complex they are.

My dad has an ‘04 S-crew. It has 130k ish miles and is comprised mostly of horse poop and rust at this point. He’s had it since it had 10k miles and he said he’ll keep it until the seat falls through the floor. He’s been crazy lucky with it as it’s needed practically nothing. He usually dumps a car before it hits 100k, but I think he’s keeping this one because it’s so rusted and basically worthless, so it’s his farm/winter beater.
I had an ‘08 that gave me all kinds of issues and I dumped it with 80k miles.
